A Prayer for Rochester on Pentecost Sunday 2020

Heal our land.
Motivate us with the gospel.
Reconcile us to one another.
Empower us with the Spirit.

Our hearts are heavy with the events of the last twenty-four hours.
We observed yesterday’s protests motivated out of love and to bring peace.
We condemn the violent acts of anarchists to riot unrest.
The protesters embody the prayers of the Psalmists who cried to You for help.
Thwart the plans of anarchists to hinder our need to hear the message of the protest.

Today, we stand in prayer united with our black brothers and sisters.
We weep and mourn the unnecessary and horrific killings of black men.
We lament with our brothers and sisters in their prayers of, “How long oh Lord?”
The gospel implores us to rebuke and condemn racism in all forms.
Our hearts grieve these grave injustices.

Thank You for Mayor Lovely Warren; Monroe County Executive, Adam Bello; Rochester Chief of Police, La’Ron Singletary; Monroe County Chief of Police, Todd Baxter; and the other leaders who have provided space for protests while protecting the city and county from violence.
Guide the leadership of our city and county with wisdom.
May they feel our prayers and receive strength in this weary season.

It’s no accident that today is Pentecost Sunday.
The Holy Spirit came freshly on Your followers in Acts.
Holy Spirit empowerment became the path of racial reconciliation.
The dividing wall of prejudice fell because of the good news of the gospel.
On this Pentecost Sunday of 2020, we pray for a new move of Your Spirit.

We pause today to pray for our city, county, and country.
Raise up Your people and church in grace and truth.
Heal our land.
Motivate us with the gospel.
Reconcile us to one another.
Empower us with the Spirit.
